What are high-tech
wires, and why are they better?
High-tech archwires are super-elastic
"memory" wires made of nickel titanium. These archwires
are bent as they are secured in place, but then slowly spring
back into their original shape, gently straightening the
teeth. These wires apply a continuous force that allows
us to move teeth with less discomfort.
What is the difference
between traditional braces and high-tech braces?
With traditional braces, brackets are bonded to the teeth
or attached to bands that encircle the teeth. An archwire
is inserted in the brackets and secured by ties (ligatures).
These ties create drag (friction) that inhibits the intended
tooth movement and transfers an unnecessary amount of pressure
from the wire to the teeth.
In contrast, high-tech braces use a sliding door to secure
the archwire. These brackets are called "self-ligating"
and do not cause the pressure or drag that traditional braces
do.
Why are high-tech braces
better?
Ideal orthodontic treatment would gently
and continuously move your teeth into the proper place.
This is exactly what high-tech braces allow, because of
the self-ligating brackets.
If it's faster, will that
hurt the long-term health of my teeth?
No. High-tech braces allow the doctor
to use lighter wires to gently move your teeth into the
proper place. Treatment is faster because there are no ties
around the braces to bind them down, not because they use
greater force. High-tech braces and wires are healthier
for the teeth and their supporting tissues.
Is it more expensive to get
treated with high-tech braces and wires?
No. High-tech braces and wires are more
expensive for us, but your fees are not. Because we believe
it is important to offer the safest, most comfortable and
efficient service to our patients, we provide high-tech
braces at no additional charge.
Where can I get more information
about high-tech braces?
We mostly use the Damon
System of high-tech brackets.
